International Women’s Day

MOM!On International Women’s Day, I celebrate my mother, Helen Taylor Johannesen, who would now be 100. Juilliard-trained composer and pianist, she came from an old Utah family, whose ancestry included John Taylor, third president of the Mormon Church. An independent, courageous woman, Helen took herself from a conservative, traditional Utah home to explore the rhythms of jazz in New York and became friends with such modern composers as Aaron Copeland, She was also company composer for Martha Graham Dance before she met and married my father, concert pianist Grant Johannesen.
